METAMORPHOSIS
"Post embryonic developmental process that occurs in various groups of metazoans." This is the definition we find when exploring the meaning of the word.
Although we read in research that this is a quick process, in certain beings, metamorphosis is a longer process, but in the end, it always results in an incredible transformation.
Maria João accepted to be a part of this project of mine, in order to make known a little of herself and her path, but also to break with preconceived standards of femininity, and to educate all those who come across these photographs.
Divided in different sets, with outfits idealized by herself, with fantasy, color and emotion: this is "Metamorphosis". Behind it is a unique and intense story, experienced in the first person.
Maria João told me that at an early stage she found herself trying to match the feminine standards demanded by society, trying to prove to others (and to herself) that she was a woman, until one day she bumped into a very simple question: Why?
The truth came next. To quote La Veneno (one of her biggest references) "Being a woman is something that is born with you, and if you are, you always will be. In fact, it's not worth anything what others will think or approve, you are a woman and you will always be a woman. Remember that it is never too late to be your true self."
The Metamorphosis, is indeed one of the most beautiful experiences of a living being. The day a butterfly gains wings and flies... it never comes crawling back.
